Physical Education

The physical education program is an integral part of a liberal arts education as it incorporates the concept of a healthy body with a healthy mind. Physical education is designed to encourage the student's knowledge, interest, competence, and participation in physical activities. Both theory and skill-based courses are offered. Emphasis is on developing and maintaining holistic wellness, including physical fitness, through lifetime fitness activities.
Requirements
All physical education courses fulfill the 1-credit general education requirement in physical education. Students may choose either a skill (100-level) or theory (200/300-level) course. Students may take up to 3 credits of physical education toward the 120 graduation credit total. Students may opt to take more than 3 credits of physical education credits as electives that do not count toward the 120 credit minimum.
The general education requirement may be fulfilled through participation on a University varsity athletic team in accordance with University policy. Policy information is available in the physical education office, the athletic department and from the registrar.
Courses
PED-128 Pickleball
Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training in addition to the vocabulary, rules, and basic skills necessary to play pickleball. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [1 credit]
PED-129 Racquetball
Instructs students in the fundamental skills and rules of the game. Playing regularly will be the emphasis of this course. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
PED-145 Disc Golf
Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training in addition to the vocabulary, rules, and basic skills necessary to play disc golf. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [1 credit]
PED-146 Introduction to Golf
Instructs students in the vocabulary, rules, basic skills and etiquette of golf. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
PED-150 Walking for Fitness
Instructs students in the basic principles of training and in "walking for fitness." Walking will be the primary component of physical activity in the course. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
PED-190 Special Topics in Physical Education
Provides opportunities for students to experience special lifetime recreational or sport activities that are not offered on a regular basis. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
PED-231 Theory of Physical Fitness and Wellness
Introduces the concept of "holistic wellness” as it relates to students in today’s society. Both individual and global wellness issues will be explored. Class discussion, student input, and student projects & presentations are paramount to this course. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 2 credits ]
PED-232 Theory and Practice of Aerobic Conditioning
Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training, with an emphasis on aerobic conditioning. Exposes students to a variety of aerobic activities and teaches the necessary techniques to develop individualized aerobic conditioning programs. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
PED-233 Theory and Practice of Weight Training
Instructs students in the in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training with an emphasis on weight training. Students will develop individualized weight training programs by applying principles to personal goals. Fulfills general education requirement in physical education. [ 1 credit ]
