Examines major categories of psychiatric diagnoses using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) multiaxial system, as well as theories of psychopathology. Students will engage further through examination of relevant literature and develop skills involved in the evaluation of potential art-based and behavioral indicators of mental disorders and the process of differential diagnosis. Ethical considerations and the effects that culture and society have on individuals with mental illness will be highlighted. A basic introduction to psychopharmacology will be included in the course, as well as ongoing conceptual developments in neuroscience. Prerequisite: Enrolled in the Graduate Art Therapy Program (MA).
