Examines corrections in the United States from the history of corrections to contemporary issues. With over two million Americans incarcerated, the complex social issues that underpin mass incarceration are addressed. This includes the disparities surrounding race, ethnicity, ability, gender, and mental health conditions. Additionally, we will look at the use of non-custodial corrections alternatives such as community service, probation and parole. This is a three-credit course that fulfills the valuing diverse identifies and perspectives (Impact of diversity) general education requirement. [ 3 credits ]
