This course explores and teaches the foundations of reading development and acquisition of literacy with a targeted focus on a structured language approach. The class addresses aspects of cognition and behavior that affect reading and writing as well as the necessary strategies and techniques to support and instruct the struggling reader. Participants will understand the earl warning signs often displayed by students with dyslexia or other related language-based learning differences. Class participants explore all parts of the acquisition of literacy, including oral language development, phonology (phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics), word recognition, spelling, fluency, and comprehension.
