This course examines how teachers use positive classroom and behavior management approaches to create learning environments that support student engagement, belonging, and well-being. Grounded in the understanding of bahavior as communication, the course emphasizes how relationships, instruction, and classroom systems shape student behavior. Students learn to design proactive, inclusive classroom environments; implement supports across tiers of intervention; and apply functional approaches to understand and respond to behavior. The course integrates trauma-informed practices, social and emotional learning, school-based mental health supports, and restorative approaches within classroom and behavior management. It further examines how identity, culture, disability, and systemic factors influence how behavior is interpreted and addressed in schools. Through applied activities, case-based analysis, and reflective practice, students develop practical strategies to support diverse learners and respond to behavior accross tiers of support. The course culminates in the development of a comprehensive, equity-centered classroom management plan grounded in research and aligned with each student's professional philosophy. [ 3 credits ]
