Analyzes pervasive themes and common concerns in utopian and dystopian visions of different times, starting with the genre-creating Renaissance classic, Thomas More's Utopia, and moving through the "nowheres" of 19th and 20th century writers like Butler, Bellamy, Zamiatin, LeGuin, and Piercy. Students trace political, philosophical, and scientific concepts underlying these imagined worlds, linking the concepts to theories of human nature on which they are based.
