IDS-274: Women in Music History

Explores the study of women in western European musical history from the Middle Ages to the early modern period and compares their experiences to those of their male counterparts through primary and secondary readings; as well as listening to their compositions. Examines social barriers that inhibited the women that we will study and explores how those barriers relate to the students today and evaluate how those barriers persist today. Students will engage in discussion about readings provided by the instructor and will also complete an exensive research project on a woman in music history of their choosing. This project will involve a presentation to their peers and a research essay featuring both primary and secondary sources. Fulfills general education requirement in Impact of Diversity.
