This course will inform students of the relationship between herbal medicine and the natural environment with its inherent biological diversity. Students will perform field work in their region under guidance by their instructor, including at least one excursion into a national/state park or nature reserve, in order to observe a selection of medicinal plants in their natural habitat. Students will communicate with plant authorities or guides in their own region, and communicate their findings to other students via the online forum. Given that this course is designed in an experiential rather than in a didactic or lecture style format, students are required to commit 45 hours, part of which is to be spent as a volunteer in a community facility or project over the eight weeks allotted to the course.
