Studies two forms of violence-revolution and terrorism--in the service of social and cultural transformation. We will examine the causes of revolution and terrorism in different cultural contexts, and analyze the worldviews of those who join revolutionary and terrorist movements: how do they try to bring about radical change, and how do they justify the use of violence? We will compare the religious, racial, nationalist, and social class dynamics of revolution and terrorism. Through studying the outcomes of their struggles, we will assess whether revolutionary and terrorist groups that fight oppression are able to overcome it,or end up recreating it in new forms. Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to grapple with the question--is violence the answer? Fulfills general education requirement in History and Intercultural Knowledge.  [ 3 credits ]
