In Practicum I, students begin with a field anlysis of policy contexts at their place of employment, engaging in site-based observations, interviews with stakeholders, and data collection to understand systemic challenges. Students will use the data they collect in practicum I in conjunction with the theories and skills they have learned throughout the program (from policy, planning, leaership and finance) and in residency to write the first chapter of their policy, planning and leadersship improvement paper (PPLIP). This chapter would consist of a discussion of values behind the proposed policy, how the policy potentially fits into the political system and economy of the locality/organization, type of policy and policy windows, preliminary stakeholder analysis, mission, mandate and organizational culture analysis, and conducting a SWOT anaylsis of the organization.
