EDU-716: Adult Learning Theory in Education

This course provides students with a practice-oriented exploration of adult learning theory and its application in diverse educational and organizational settins. Students will engage with foundational and contemporary theories--including andragogy, self-directed learning, transformative learning, experiential learning, and situated learning--to understand how adults acquire, apply, and reflect on knowledge throughout the lifespan. Designed with scholar-practitioners in mind, the course emphasizes the translation of theory into effective instructional design, leadership practices, professional development strategies, and organizational learning initiatives. Special attention is given to adult learners in higher education, the workplace, community programs, and digital learning environments. Through case studies, reflective practice, and applied research, students will analyze how adult learning is shaped by social, cultural, and institutional factors, with particular focus on equity, access, and inclusion. The course supports students in developing leadership capacities that enhance learning outcomes for diverse adult populations. [ 3 credits ]
