IDS-328: Hrs: Mythology in Art and Literature

Explores in seminar format, Greek mythology in art and literature from antiquity through the present day. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this course will examine primary texts in art and literature, ranging from Homer's the Iliad to the Parthenon Marbles. This class will also read and study contemporary retellings of these mythologies, including writers such as Pat Barker, Natalie Haynes, Madeleine Miller, and Colm Toibin. Art assignments will include iconographic analysis discussing the narrative strategies used by the artist as well as the contextrual history of the work. Literature will include literary analysis discussing the narrative strategies of the writer as well as the contextual history work. The class will incorporate visits to area museums and theatrical performances connected to the art and literature studied. Prerequisite: Morrissy scholar or permission. Fulfills general education requirement in either art orliterature, Intercultural Knowledge. [ 3 credits ]
