Functional nutrition views the gastrointestinal (GI) system as central to health and disease. Students explore GI health and disorders through an integrative and functional lens, emphasizing root causes and systemic effects. Imbalances in motility, secretions, the microbiome, mucosal immunity, and barrier integrity are reviewed along with contributing factors and associated testing and evaluation. Students examine the evidence for individual foods, diets, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle factors as therapeutic GI interventions and apply the evidence in clinical case studies.
