Physical Education

Physical Education is an integral part of a liberal arts education as it incorporates the concept of a healthy body with a healthy mind. Physical education is designed to encourage the student's knowledge, interest, competence, and participation in physical activities and to develop strategies to improve and promote lifelong holistic well-being. Both theory and skill-based courses are offered.

Requirements

Students are required to complete 1 credit in Wellness.  The following courses may be taken to fulfill the requirement:  PED-128, PED-160, PED-231, & PED-232.  Students may complete up to 3 credits of physical education toward the 120 graduation credit total. Students may opt to take more than 3 credits of Physical Education credits as electives that do not count toward the 120 credit minimum.

The General Education Requirement may be fulfilled through participation on a University varsity athletic team in accordance with University policy. Policy information is available in the Physical Education office, the Athletic Department and from the Registrar's office.

Courses

PED-128: Pickleball

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training and their connection to overall holistic health. The course will focus o incorporating the game of pickleball as part of an overall strategy for increased holistic health and fitness benefits. The vocabulary, rules, ad basic skills necessary to play pickleball will be an integral part of the course. Fulfills general education requirement in wellness. [ 1 credit ]

PED-129: Racquetball

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the fundamental skills and rules of the game. Playing regularly will be the emphasis of this course. [ 1 credit ]

PED-145: Disc Golf

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the vocabulary, rules, and basic skills necessary to play disc golf. Participation in disc golf, both in practice and informal completion will be the primary component of physical activity in the course. Students will also be instructed in the basic components of fitness and principles of training. [ 1 credit ]

PED-150: Walking for Fitness

Credits 1.00

The course will instruct students in the basic principles of training and in walking for fitness. Walking will be the primary component of physical activity in the course. [ 1 credit ]

PED-160: Busy Life, Healthy Life

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the basic components of fitness and principles of training and their connection and importance to overall holistic health. Students will assess their personal daily activity levels and diets and develop strategies to incorporate more physical activity and a healthier lifestyle into daily life. Students are required to have a wearable fitness tracker that at a minimum measures steps and distance. Fulfills general education requirement in wellness. [1 credit]

PED-161: Connecting the Dots: The Mind, Body, Spirit Relationship

Credits 1.00

Explores how health is defined as an optimal state of physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. This course investigates and practices a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy sense of well-being. Fulfills the general education requirement in wellness . [ 1 credit ]

PED-190: Special Topics in Physical Education

Credits 1.00

This course is intended to provide opportunities for students to learn special lifetime recreational or sport activities that may be seasonal, situational, regional, etc. It will allow for offering activities that cannot be offered on a regular basis. Examples: disc golf, fitness walking, etc. [ 1 credit ]

PED-231: Theory of Physical Fitness and Wellness

Credits 2.00

Introduces the concept of "holistic wellness" as it relates to students in today's society. Individual and global wellness issues will be explored. Class discussion, student input, and student projects and presentations are paramount to this course. Fulfills general education requirement in wellness. [ 2 credits ]

PED-232: Theory and Practice of Aerobic Conditioning

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training, with an emphasis on aerobic conditioning and the impact of physical fitness on overall holistic health. Teaches the necessary techniques to develop individualized aerobic conditioning programs and strategies for lifelong fitness and health. Fulfills general education requirement in wellness. PED-233: Theory and Practice of Weight Training

Credits 1.00

Instructs students in the theoretical and practical application of basic principles of fitness and training with an emphasis on weight training. Students will develop individualized weight training programs byapplying principles to personal goals. [ 1 credit ]

PED-301: American Women in Sports History

Credits 3.00

Explores the history of women in sports with an emphasis on the important contributions of American women. Examines how the social and cultural evolution of gender roles and stereotypes have influenced women's participation and achievement in sports. Focuses on how race, class, sexual orientation and significant events in history have affected women's sports in America. The course will be taught from a feminist perspective by affirming the basic principle that a society's rights, opportunities, privileges, and responsibilities as they are related to participation in sport should be available to everyone regardless of gender. The course will examine how socially constructed definitions of gender and sexual orientation have led to harmful male and female stereotypes and how they have often contributed to discrimination towards female athletes and hindered the growth of women's sports. Fulfills the general education requirement in diversity. Elective in women's studies program. [ 3 credits ]
